I need a little timeline refresher. I know that we changed to authentication through the portal in August 2006. When did we add LIRN databases outside of Minnesota? When did the new look to the library page take effect? (April 2007?)
There was a slight decline from 1st quarter to 2nd. What changes were instituted Jan. through March?
When did the new page layout go into effect? April? That coincides with a large drop. As much as I hate to say it, I think students are not sure where to go to get to the databases. When they're there, they don't know which database to choose.
An instructor told me the library page was missing some of the database we had had before the new page rolled out in April. He wondered where the LIRN databases were. He had gotten so used to the click-path he used to take prior to our new library page that he couldn't find the databases he wanted. I think he was also used to the icons from LIRN, such as the green apple for Health and Wellness. He's a promoter of database usage, so that's worrisome to me.
When it comes to online students, I think a potential cause of statistical decline could be misdirection. I've encountered a couple online classes where the link to library resources was given as the old intranet page from way back. (Emily, I already told you about those, and they've been fixed.)
Emily, can you give us more information and stats? If anything, it seems like database usage should be increasing! It's odd... I really thought our website was getting easier to use - not harder!!!
