Are any of you planning open workshops to highlight the new databases? I've been thinking about offering open workshops by discipline. During the workshops I'd like to cover our traditional resources as well as our recent database additions. Do you think students would be interested or would participate? I hate holding empty workshops (sorry for complaining). Can anyone think of ways to "jazz" them up?

My best turn out (still only 2 or 3 students) was when I marketed the open workshop to a program area. My advice would be to schedule the workshop for day/night when there's the highest concentration of classes in that program. Make little quarter-sheet marketing flyers (invitations?) and leave them scattered on the tables in those classrooms when those classes meet the week before. Maybe in your marketing, include images or other cool things from the database(s) you'll be highlighting, and use that as a teaser. (Want to be able to find more video clips like this one? Nice ideas, Chandra. I'm interested in the idea of constructing it as a special invitation to only students in a certain discipline. Eye catching graphics are also a good suggestion. I think I'll start working on putting something together soon.
Ooooh good ideas... I like making it program specific. Maybe these workshops could be in conjunction with events.. like I know that CJ has had law enforcement employees come in to talk with students, etc.
There has been some talk about having panel of paralegals to answer questions.. I could team up and make that also a library workshop night.
Food, Prizes, & Luck have served me well.
Visiting classes or sending your workstudy(s) into classes to announce an upcoming workshop has worked in the past for me. Scheduling the open workshop a few weeks ahead and putting up plenty of signs also seemed beneficial.
I was going to do a database workshop this quarter also. I am shooting for week 3. I am going to do one at night during the week and then one on the weekend. I have talked with all full time staff to see who would like to offer this workshop as part of their class. One of the CIS instructors has requested that I offer this workshop on his night and if his students don't show up I will be invited to his class. Last time I offered a Saturday I had 3 students show up and they got one on one help and were taught other information. I have been mentioning the workshops I offer when I go in to present in classes and I let students know that I send out emails. I also hang posters in all the classrooms and put the announcement on the TV. I also ask all instructors (by email, mail boxes and in person) to announce the workshops in class. I am going to try the invitations on desks. Good Idea.
