Blerb for Admission Reps

I'm meeting with my campus' admission reps on Friday to tell them what TO say (and what not to say) to prospective students. Has anyone else done so? Success? What exactly did you tell them? Any and all guidance and particulars would be appreciated!

One of my plans for next quarter is to have an online library workshop for the admissions team. I think that it will be easier for them to represent the library accurately once they experience what we have to offer.

- The physical books that you see on this campus are a grain of sand compared to the resources that we make available. If you were trying to fit all of our electronic and physical materials together, they would not fit on any of our campuses (combined).
- We have journals and magazines in every program area- the SAME journals and magazines that professionals in the field read to stay current.
- We offer workshops in and out of class to help students learn how to use the internet to search effectively, to learn how to use databases, and to develop citations & papers in APA style.
- A librarian is available to the students 7 days a week. All student questions are answered within 24 hours (and usually within the hour).
- 95% of the databases that we offer on the portal have full-text content - students can access and e-mail or print articles from any computer with Internet access, anytime.
- Most of the content of our databases is updated daily - you can read today's Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and many international, national, state and local newspapers in our databases.
- We have over 15,000 eBooks. While the concept of an eBook may be strange to some students, most find them very easy to use - and much easier for research (you can search for keywords in individual pages, rather reading the entire book)
-the Campus Librarian is available to help with the research process, from deciding on a topic to editing a final draft.
- You never have to pay out of pocket for library resources - printing, databases, Interlibrary loan are all covered.
- You can borrow a book from any Rasmussen Campus (delivered within the week). You can borrow a book from any library in Illinois or Minnesota (delivered within 3 weeks) You can borrow a book from nearly any library in the world (delivered within a month). Sometimes, articles take less delivery time.
- We ain't your momma's library. We are here to meet students needs, not just horde books. We assure that a student has the resources to meet the challenges of a career and the confidence to use those resources whenever needed.

Hope that helps.

Chandra, I think a library workshop for the admissions team is a great idea. Keep me posted on your progress. Thanks.

We had a meeting with all admissions reps during one of our faculty meetings last quarter. I discussed a number of items that Emily posted and tried to emphasize that wording is very important in their presentation of library resources, i.e. don't begin with "I know the library looks small compared to the university libraries". It seems to have helped their understanding of our support for students and definitely helped the presentation wording.
